Indexed Finance and KyberSwap hacked

Recently, the identity of the hacker behind the high-profile attacks on DeFi platforms Indexed Finance and KyberSwap has been revealed: Andean Medjedovic.

According to documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice on February 3, 2025, 22-year-old Medjedovic stole a total of $65 million—$16.5 million from Indexed Finance and $48.8 million from KyberSwap. These attacks sent shockwaves through the DeFi community and attracted intense scrutiny from U.S. authorities.

Medjedovic & Vitalik: Same School, Different Paths

Born in Canada, Medjedovic displayed exceptional talent early on, completing high school in Waterloo at just 14 years old. He then pursued a mathematics degree at the prestigious University of Waterloo, the same institution attended by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.

However, instead of becoming a positive force in the blockchain space, Medjedovic chose a criminal path. Following his attacks, he devised a meticulous plan to cover his tracks and legitimize the stolen funds—demonstrating a deep understanding of the crypto ecosystem and sophisticated money laundering techniques.

Medjedovic is now a fugitive, facing multiple serious charges, including online fraud, computer system attacks, and extortion. He is also accused of laundering money through blockchain bridges and crypto mixers.

Exploiting a smart contract vulnerability in KyberSwap, the hacker used flash loans to inject large sums into liquidity pools. They then manipulated prices and executed calculated trades to trick the system, allowing them to withdraw more assets than they had deposited.
