More than 600,000 tokens were created in January alone, raising concerns about liquidity and market dilution.
According to data from GeckoTerminal, shared by Bobby Ong, co-founder and CEO of CoinGecko, over 600,000 new cryptocurrencies were launched in January, a 12-fold increase compared to the same period in 2024. This also marks a record month for the number of newly issued tokens.
Ong from CoinGecko agreed: “Too many tokens, and each one dilutes attention, while trader liquidity is even more limited. That’s why we’re not seeing major altcoin ‘pumps’ like in previous cycles”.
According to CoinDesk, Bitcoin has surged from $40,000 to over $100,000 in 2024, but most altcoins have only experienced modest gains during the same period. However, when Bitcoin’s price drops, altcoins quickly lose tens of percent in value.
