Pavel Durov, the billionaire co-founder of the messaging app Telegram, was arrested at Le Bourget airport on the outskirts of Paris after disembarking from his private jet on the August 24.
According to an anonymous source cited by TF1 TV, Durov was arrested under a French court order due to charges related to activities on the Telegram messaging app. The 39-year-old is believed to have flown in from Azerbaijan and is scheduled to appear in court on August 25.
The Russian news agency TASS reported that the Russian embassy in France has intervened to monitor the situation.
Pavel Durov, a Russian entrepreneur, holds citizenship in France and the UAE (United Arab Emirates) and currently resides in Dubai, where Telegram is headquartered.
According to Forbes, Durov has a net worth of $15.5 billion. He left Russia in 2014 after refusing to shut down opposition channels on the social media platform VK.
Durov and his brother Nikolai founded Telegram in 2013, a messaging app with end-to-end encryption that now has around 900 million active users. The platform allows users to create “channels” for quick discussion and information sharing.
Telegram is currently ranked as one of the major social media platforms, following Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and WeChat.
