Two Dormant Bitcoin Wallets Wake Up After 14 Years (10k BTC)

On the morning of July 4, two long-dormant Bitcoin wallets suddenly transferred 10,000 BTC each, according to a report by CoinDesk. These addresses first received Bitcoin on April 3, 2011, when BTC was trading at just $0.78.

Today, the value of each wallet exceeds $1.1 billion—representing a staggering 139,000x increase from their original acquisition price.

The BTC originally came from the wallet “1HqXB…gDwcK,” which sent 23,377.83 BTC to three different addresses in 2011. Two of those wallets, “12tLs…xj2me” and “1KbrS…AWJYm,” held the majority of their funds untouched until this week. The third, which received 3,377 BTC, was emptied in 2011.

Later on July 4, on-chain analytics firm Arkham reported that six other wallets transferred over 10,000 BTC in a series of transactions. The total value moved exceeded $8.6 billion at current prices.

Arkham suggested that these wallets are likely controlled by a single entity, though no individual or organization has publicly claimed ownership.

The transferred BTC was moved into new addresses using modern formats that offer lower transaction fees. Both new wallets have remained inactive since receiving the funds. The identities behind them remain unknown.

All of the Bitcoin involved dates back to the so-called “Satoshi era” (2009–2011), when Bitcoin was still in its infancy. Coins from this period are considered exceptionally rare and are often referred to as the “holy grail” of crypto due to their historical value and scarcity. They are closely tracked by analysts and traders, as any major movement could signal a shift in sentiment by early believers or miners.

This event marks the largest known transfer of Bitcoin from the Satoshi era in recent history, drawing intense attention from the global crypto community.
